Membership Subscription Explained

In becoming a beekeeping member of Chalfonts Beekeeping Society you have been enrolled into 3 associations, the local Society (Chalfonts), the County Association (Bucks) and the British Beekeepers’ Association (BBKA). Currently, the County’s subscription is set at nil, leaving two organisations to pay for.  There is a further levy to fund an insurance payout in the event of colony loss through Notifiable Disease, called Bee Diseases Insurance (BDI).  Membership of all these is compulsory if you are keeping bees under our auspices.

There are also various optional items you can take up if you wish to.  These are beekeeping magazine subscriptions offered at discounted rates and voluntary donations to beekeeping causes.

There are three different classes of membership offered by BBKA.  This is designed to accommodate people who wish to be covered by, or associated with, the BBKA whether or not they keep bees.  As most BBKA members do keep bees, these are the most numerous, Registered Members.

Club Membership (CBS)

Our local Society charges one subscription rate for all members of the family.  This comprehensive membership is designed to encourage all members and their families to support and take part in the club’s activities, such as the honey show.  The membership fee is £10.00 p.a.

Bee Diseases Insurance (BDI)

This is a mutually owned insurance fund which exists to make compensatory payment to a member who has lost his/her bees to Notifiable Diseases.   A premium to cover up to three colonies is included in the compulsory beekeeping members’ fee.  Beyond three colonies an additional premium is due, the level of which may be calculated by reference to the accompanying chart.
